For: admins and editors. Everyone who can see a playbook can look at its history. Restoring and deleting versions needs the right to change the playbook.
Open a playbook and look at the panel on the right. It has two tabs: History and Test. History is where this article happens.
Every save is a version
Each time a playbook's title, description, content, variables, tag or attached files change, sqemes keeps the new state as a version, with who changed it and when. That includes changes made from an AI tool over MCP, not only the ones made in the editor. Using a playbook or marking it as a favourite changes nothing and makes no version.
Playbooks that existed before version history was introduced start with one version called “History starts here”. What happened to them before that is not known.
Seeing what changed
Click a version in the list. Below it you see what changed since the version before: lines that were added in green, lines that were removed in red and struck through. Long stretches that did not change are folded away. Changes to the title, the description, the tag and the attached files are listed above the text.
Restoring an earlier version
Select the version and click Restore. Its state becomes the current playbook — and is saved as a new version, marked “Restored from version N”. Nothing is overwritten: the state you restored away from is still in the history, so a restore can itself be undone.
⚠️ Unsaved changes in the editor are discarded by a restore. The confirmation tells you when that applies.
Files are the one exception
A version remembers which files were attached, not what was in them. If a file has been deleted since, it cannot come back: a restore attaches every file that still exists, leaves the deleted ones out, and tells you their names. In the history, such a file is shown as “(deleted)”. If you replaced a file with a new one, the old one counts as deleted too.
Deleting old versions
There is no limit on how many versions a playbook keeps. You can delete versions you do not need; the current one cannot be deleted. A deleted version is gone for everyone and cannot be restored.
What is not versioned
Personas. Only playbooks have a history.
Who can see it and who can edit it. Those settings are not part of a version, and a restore leaves them as they are.
The Test tab
Next to History, Test lets you try the playbook before you save it. It works like sqemes Chat — the model can reach your other playbooks too — with the one difference that it uses what is in the editor right now, saved or not.
